The largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry began April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. British Petroleum (BP) is responsible for the disaster, according to the U.S. government.

Economic Impact on Louisiana Businesses

In addition to the enormous impact the spill has had on the natural environment in the Gulf states, the disaster has devastated the job market of local workers and the fishing, restaurant and tourism industries.

Property Values

Home Values have been hit especially hard. According to CNN Money, homeowners in the area could lose:

  • $68 million in lost property value during the next year
  • $3 billion in the next five years

Fishing Jobs

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration banned about one third of the Gulf or 78,597 square miles from fishing on June 23, 2010.

Tourism

  • The U.S. Travel Association estimated the economic impact on tourism in the Gulf States at over $23 billion in the next three years.
  • Tourism usually contributes 400,000 jobs in the region according to the association and generates $34 billion in revenue each year.

Financial Loss Claims in Louisiana

Nearly one month after the spill began, 130 lawsuits had been filed against BP, Transocean, Cameron International Corporation and Halliburton Energy Services. The majority of the plaintiffs are fisherman who have lost jobs and tourist resorts getting cancellations.

  • Louisiana shrimpers were the first to file a class action lawsuit against BP for the Gulf oil spill. They filed the suit April 28, 2010 on behalf of all Louisiana coastal residents whose livelihoods had been affected by the spill. Halliburton and Swiss-based Transocean Ltd. were also named in the suit.
  • May 4, 2010 — the Gulf Oil Spill Litigation Group filed a class action suit for the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster on behalf of Louisiana shrimpers, fisherman, charter boat captains, food processing companies as well as all other Louisiana residents and business who have suffered financial losses.
