A University of Southern Mississippi Report of June 14, 2010, projected revenue losses between May and the end of August to be $119,413,000 in the coastal counties of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson. This is down five percent from the previous year.
The report’s findings were based upon interviews with businesses including:
- Hotels
- Restaurants
- Food and beverage outlets
- Charter and head boats
- Casinos and casino hotels
- Seafood processors
- Suppliers to the seafood industry
It did not include losses in the fishing industry.
Reportedly, revenues from non-casino hotels were down 50 percent from the previous year during their peak tourist season. The loss was equal to $26,800,000. Seafood-based restaurants were down 30 percent from the same time in 2009, while seafood prices were up 30 percent. This came to a loss of $58,416,000.
The report stated that charter boats and head boats were in “free fall,” down an average of 70 percent while some were down 90 percent. Recreational fishing dropped more than 90 percent. The impact on the oyster industry was unclear. Suppliers to these industries also suffered substantial losses. Boat and boat trailer sales declined between April and May by 65 to 70 percent.
If these losses are added to the losses suffered by the industries that serve them, the report projected an estimated loss of $119,400,000 between May and the end of August.
