Attorney General Troy King told reporters that Alabama is suing BP, Transocean and Halliburton for damages caused by the Gulf oil spill that occurred in April 2010.
“We are making this claim because we believe that BP has inflicted catastrophic harm on the state,” King told Reuters.
The amount has not been specified, however King says the suit will seek the full amount of compensation it will take to build Alabama’s economy back. Other companies are named in the suit, including Anadarko Petroleum Corp.
The suit, reportedly, claims negligence and states that it is believed that a blowout in the cement work is what caused the oil rig to explode.
The Deepwater Horizon explosion is the most catastrophic oil spill in U.S. history, and has caused economic devastation all across the Gulf. It has been reported that Louisiana has been hit the hardest. Other states that have been impacted include Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Texas.
