Some 77 Gulf oil spill cases plus 200 more “tag-along” actions are being sent to a federal judge in New Orleans. U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier was selected by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to preside over the oil spill cases, Aug. 10, 2010.
According to reports, the panel’s order stated that it chose New Orleans because Southeast Louisiana is the center hub for these types of claims.
Claims have been filed on behalf of individuals, businesses and property owners impacted by the Deepwater Horizon explosion off the Gulf. BP, formerly British Petroleum, is being named as defendant in the claims, in addition to other companies who may be liable for the spill.
Other companies being named include Transocean Ltd., owner of the Deepwater Horizon, Halliburton and Cameron International.
BP announced it plans to implement a fund for those affected by the spill. It made an initial deposit of $3 million and says the fund will total $20 billion.
